A Message from Mayor Jim Newberry

Mayor's Head Shot

Dear Friend,

The $787 billion economic stimulus bill recently passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama presents an unprecedented opportunity for Lexington to create jobs, address unmet needs and invest in key initiatives. We are working hard to ensure that we take advantage of every opportunity the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan presents.

Furthermore, we must ensure that the funds are spent wisely and that we are transparent as we make decisions and expenditures. I have been privileged to meet at the White House with President Obama, Cabinet members and top administration staffers to discuss the stimulus package. During our Feb. 20 meeting, the President told the Mayors that if any local government wastes this money he plans to “call them out on it.”

Because there is a clear need for accountability and transparency, I created the Mayor’s Commission on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on Jan. 31. This group will set spending priorities in anticipation of receiving funds, and use best practices to oversee the expenditure of such funds. The Commission meets every other Thursday at 4 p.m. in the third floor conference room in the Phoenix Building, 101 E. Vine St. The meetings are open to the public and are televised live on G-TV Channel 3 and streamed live over the internet at www.lexingtonky.gov.

In addition, I have established this website so that you can track our progress. It includes news releases, documents relating to commission activities, provides links to actions at the state and national levels and invites your input. You can E-mail the commission with questions or comments at recovery@lfucg.com. Please check this page often. We will be adding information as it becomes available.

Thank you for your interest. Together, we can help move Lexington, our state and our nation forward.

Sincerely,

Mayor's Signature
Jim Newberry, Mayor
